Funny Farm Update for July

07.10.11

And, kids, it’s not so good. July and August to Texas gardeners are about as depressing as not having a date on Saturday night. Oh well, at least where I live I can have a fall garden that lasts into spring. And that time of year, it’s too cold for bugs which makes me happy.

All right, well let’s check in with the Good, the Bad and the Ugly. And the deceased.

One of my smaller Arugula Plants looking nice and healthy

Later this week I’m going to show you how to make Arugula Pesto. Yum. Nice and peppery and by the end of the week, I’ll share a great recipe that I actually invented using the Pesto.

Remember my experiment – Sweet Potatoes?

They were little sticks when I planted them. Well, just look at them today.

The vines are growing out of the bed!

I think you harvest Sweet Potatoes in October, so the whole Funny Farm may be filled with nothing but Sweet Potato vines. I sure hope there’s lots of big fat sweet potatoes under there!

Swiss Chard is huge

Of course I need to cut back those really large leaves as they are probably bitter. That’s a giant dill plant in the front. I’ve got way too much dill and not anymore cucumbers. I have nothing to pickle. Weeds are growing great, though.

I planted sunflowers for the birds

They’re between 5 and 7 feet tall. I just love them and so does somebody else in the garden.

Rather a good butterfly shot if I do say so myself

Unfortunately, that’s about it for things that look good in the garden. There is one thing that’s still producing like crazy. I pick one of these about every 3 days. My friends are getting very creative with recipes using this.

The star of the garden these days

I’ve had at least 10 beautiful eggplants off one bush. It hasn’t been attacked by bugs, the blooms are beautiful purple and the eggplants just keep coming. I had never grown this before, but you bet I will again. Heat doesn’t seem to bother it either.

The Zinnias are still gorgeous

Mom and I have nice vases full of zinnias. A woman should always have flowers around. They make her happy, just like golf clubs do for a man.

Well, tomorrow let’s take a deep breath and look at the bad and the ugly…

Spreading laughter throughout the world…one chuckle at a time. Pray for DDM.
