Media Mogul

Remember your New Years Resolutions? Me neither except for the one I actually kept. And it’s wearing my keyboard and my brain out.

I resolved at the first of the year to start a new company – Medina Mikie, Ink.- so I could make the world a funnier place. The idea was to syndicate my column, have a professional website, sell merchandise based on my characters, do a funny radio bit and publish my first book.

So, I started with the goal of a having a website because as we all know, if you don’t have a website, you’re still “a nobody” to newspaper editors and Google. Immediately I hired a lovely local lady to set up my site.

At our first meeting I explained my goals to Computer Wizard Webmaster. She listened patiently to all my ideas and responded with the words that still strike terror in my heart.

CWW: “Well there’s only one way to be a success in the Internet world.”
ME: “And what’s that? To be a good writer?”
CWW: “Heavens no. You have to blog.”
ME: “Blog? Does that have anything to do with cleaning my windows because I’m not very good at that.”
CWW: “No silly. A blog is defined as a web log. It’s a blended word like Brangelina.”
ME: “You mean like writing a diary only being dumb enough to put it on the Internet? If I do that, I’ll never be able to run for President!”

Of course, because of my twenties, I’ll never be President anyway. Before I could blink, Computer Wizard Webmaster had the site set up and demanded that I start blogging immediately.

That’s when Writer’s Block struck. I sat in front of the blank computer screen and pondered what to do. It’s not like I travel the world nor have an exciting social life. I’m stuck at home being a 24/7 caregiver for a demented woman, an insane teenager, and three animals that wake me up all night long.

Being sleep deprived, I decided to try my hand at blogging anyway so I copied and pasted my column into my blog. My Computer Wizard Webmaster was not pleased.

CWW: “I said to blog, not stick your column in there.”
ME: “But I don’t know what to blog about.”
CWW: “Well, find a cute man; go out on a date and blog about that.”
ME: “But won’t that make me a romance novelist?”

Luckily, fate intervened and I received a Media Pass to the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo. I grabbed my brand new camera and headed to town. I wandered around aimlessly taking pictures of cow butts, clown trash cans and new Ford F150’s. Then I came home with my digital pictorial and began to blog.

Two and a half months later, I think I’m finally getting the hang of it. Sure, DDM, TEM and the animals are all half blind from the photos I’ve snapped of them and I think the vegetables in the garden will never be the same, but it’s not easy to find something to write everyday while stuck out in the middle of nowhere. Thank God for bugs.

Today, Google knows my name and I now write five days a week for all the world to see. As far as I can tell, I have six fans. Why not take pity on me and check out my blog? I’m pretty sure to be a Media Mogul you need at least 10 fans. If I can get an extra chuckle out of you every week, it’ll all have been worth it. www.mikiebaker.com
